Ever wanted a shortcut to contractor knowledge?
Just ask.

Journeyman is a voice calculator with 150+ trade formulas — the same ones contractors use to figure out materials, cuts, and quantities. Say what you need. Get the answer a contractor would give you.

You're pouring a patio.

10 by 12, 4 inches deep. That's not 480 cubic feet. It's 1.48 cubic yards. The supply house sells concrete by the yard, not the foot. And rounding wrong here means a second trip when the truck driver tells you to come back tomorrow.

Journeyman does the math the way a concrete guy would — in the units the supply house actually uses. Ask “how many yards of concrete for a 10 by 12 patio, 4 inches deep” and you get 1.48 yd³. Round up to 1.5 to be safe. Done.

Show the math:
10 × 12 = 120 ft²
4" ÷ 12 = 0.333'
120 × 0.333 = 39.96 ft³
39.96 ÷ 27 = 1.48 yd³

What it's like to actually use this

Finishing the basement

You measured the walls. You know you need drywall. Then there's compound. And tape. And screws. And corner bead.

12×14 room, 8' ceilings → ~416 sqft wall area, 13 sheets, 4 boxes of screws, ~375' tape, 3.5 gal compound.

Painting the living room

You bought 3 gallons. You needed 2. Now you've got Agreeable Gray sitting in your garage for the next 5 years.

14×16 room, 9' ceiling, 2 doors + 3 windows → ~430 sqft. At 350 sqft/gal = 1.2 gal. 2 coats with primer = 4 gal total.

Tiling the bathroom

One bag of thinset covers 60 sqft. Your bathroom is 50 sqft. Should be fine, right? Wrong — because tile size changes everything.

50 sqft bathroom. 12×12 tile (1/4" notch) = ~1 bag. 12×24 tile (1/2" notch) = ~2 bags. Tile size determines trowel size.
