Tiles Needed
Calculate number of tiles for an area
How this calc works
This calc takes the area you are tiling and the size of your tile and returns the tile count, then adds waste for cuts at the edges. The waste add is the part people underbuy: even a simple rectangular floor needs 10%, and a diagonal layout or a room with lots of corners needs 15-20%.
Here is the insight a tile setter carries: always buy from the same dye lot in one trip. Tile color shifts batch to batch, and the box you go back for next week may not match the floor you already laid. Buying the waste up front is not just for cuts — it is your matched-lot insurance and your future repair stock.
Common mistakes
The biggest miss is buying tile count exactly with zero waste, then breaking three on the last cut and stalling the whole job waiting on a special order that no longer matches.
The second is forgetting that tile is only part of the order. Thinset, grout, backer board, spacers, and edge trim all scale with the same area — the related calcs cover each, and big-tile jobs need notably more thinset per square foot than the bag label assumes.
