How this calc works

This calc takes the wall and ceiling area you are covering and divides by the area of one sheet — a 4x8 sheet is 32 square feet, a 4x12 is 48 — then adds a waste factor for cuts around openings. The result is the sheet count you carry in and the number you order.

A pro thinks in sheet size, not just count: 12-foot sheets mean fewer butt joints to tape and a faster, flatter finish, but they are brutal to carry up stairs. The honest tradeoff is fewer joints versus harder handling. Match the sheet length to your wall runs to cut the number of seams you have to finish.

Common mistakes

The sheet count is only the start of the order. Joint compound, tape, screws, and corner bead are the line items people forget — see the related calcs. Run the full-project drywall calc to capture all of them at once.

The other miss is buying all 4x8 sheets to keep them light, then spending a day taping the extra butt joints that the longer sheets would have eliminated. Weigh the handling against the finishing time.
